  28. An Ancient Saga tells us how
  29. in the Beginning the First Cow
  30. (for nothing living yet had birth
  31. but elemental Cow on earth)
  32. began to lick cold stones and mud:
  33. Under her warm tongue flesh and blood
  34. blossomed, a miracle to believe;
  35. And so was born Adam, and Eve.
  36. Here now is chaos once again,
  37. Primeval mud, cold stones and rain.
  38. Here flesh decays and blood drips red,
  39. And the Cow's dead, the Old Cow's dead.

  43. of how the earth grew dull and cold
  44. And how the Second Cow begot
  45. The children of toilsome lot:
